The low is currently estimated to sit 555 kilometres north of Port Hedland, moving south at 11 kilometres per hour.

The BoM has said the low may develop into a cyclone by Friday, with gale force winds possible between Wallal and Dampier.

Communities from Wallal to Mardie have been advised to prepare for cyclonic weather and to organise emergency kit with gale force winds likely even if a cyclone does not develop.

Heavy rain is forecast over the Pilbara and far western Kimberly with a flood watch issued for the Pilbara.

More information will be released at 3.00pm AWST.
