Curious seal pup drops in at Perth marina

A Perth man has filmed an inquisitive seal pup swimming beside a boat at the Woodman Point marina.

Perth Boat School owner and trainer Mike Beanland was doing skipper training on August 25 when the pup appeared, following his boat.

He told 9news.com.au he was so surprised he began recording the charming encounter on camera.

Mr Beanland said he’d seen the pup swimming alongside other boats in the days beforehand, and even approaching fishermen for a feed.

He said while other adult seals occasionally visit the marina, this seal pup marks the first he’s ever seen.

Initially he harboured some concern for the animal, who appeared rather thin, wildlife experts had advised him that seal pups usually leave their mother to fend for themselves.

Mr Beanland said he is concerned the animal might become too dependent on people to feed it, or worse – become injured by a boat.

A colleague has been asking boaters to take care so as to ensure the curious pup does not get run over or injured by boat propellers.
