Two teens charged for allegedly ramming cop car in Melbourne

Two teenagers have been charged after allegedly ramming a police car in an attempt to evade officers north-east of Melbourne.

The pair were spotted in an allegedly stolen red Mazda on Main Street in Croydon about 1.45am today, sparking a helicopter to be called in to help track them.

Officers shortly later closed in on the car, which was parked on Surrey Road, and saw the two men appearing to be hiding inside.

"The driver tried to escape the cordon and allegedly rammed a police car before the pair were removed from the vehicle and arrested by Operation Trinity officers without incident," police said.

A 17-year-old boy from Ringwood was charged with damage to emergency service vehicle by reckless driving, theft of motor vehicle, two counts of handle stolen goods, learner driver without accompanying supervisor, shop theft and driving in manner dangerous.

He was bailed to appear at a children's court at a later date.

A 18-year-old man from Bayswater was charged with theft of motor vehicle and handle stolen goods.

He was bailed to face Ringwood Magistrates' Court on November 15.

The charges come in police efforts to target alleged burglars and car thieves each night under Operation Trinity.

As a result, more than 1450 arrests have been made in the past 12 months with a further 6600 processed for other offences.
