'It is my fault': Driver appeals sentence after Sydney hit-run injures three children

A driver who ran a red light and mowed down three children has been released on bail after he immediately appealed the 26-month jail sentence he was handed today.

Vansh Khanna ran a red light and struck three kids crossing at a green pedestrian light in Crows Nest before fleeing the scene in May this year.

One of the children suffered serious injuries and the other two children suffered minor injuries.

The 19-year-old, who is in Australia on a study visa, was charged with several offences, including dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm, negligent driving (occasion grievous bodily harm), and failing to stop and assist after vehicle impact causing grievous bodily harm.

Khanna fronted Manly Local Court today to be sentenced for the crimes, which he claimed occurred due to a moment of "inattention".

Khanna's lawyer read his client's reasoning for the hit and run to the court.

"I panicked after the incident because in India sticks and stones would be thrown at you," the court heard.

"I was shaken, shivering," the statement continued.

"I pray for the victims to give them strength and courage.

"It is my fault and only I am to blame."

The prosecutor argued "the accused made a choice".

"He saw the red light, he saw the green light facing pedestrians, he made a decision.. that decision was based upon him being in a hurry, which I say does not amount to momentary inattention," the prosecutor said.

Khanna was sentenced to 26 months' imprisonment and taken to the cells.

One of the victims and his mother were in court for the outcome and said "justice has been served".

But immediately after sentencing, Khanna's lawyers launched an appeal.

The 19-year-old was then granted bail on strict conditions including surrendering his passport and not to drive a motor vehicle.
