Cricket fan, 12, bowls over Australia Post with petition

The faces of Australia's victorious Ashes side will grace a commemorative stamp thanks to a 12-year-old cricket fan.

Ned Gentile, of Avondale Heights, northwest of Melbourne, was so thrilled by the Aussie Test team's performance that he petitioned Australia Post to put the cricketers on a stamp.

Today, they made it official with an announcement that two stamps – a domestic and international version – would be released in the next few weeks, after the petition received more than 1000 signatures in its first 24 hours.

"I'm just really excited," Ned said.

"I had no idea when I started my change.org petition that I'd get so much support and that I would actually win.

"I was so excited when the lady from Australia Post rang me [last week] to say they were going to agree to my petition."

Ned, who plays for the Airport West Under-14s, counts David Warner and Mitchell Johnson as his favourite cricketers.

He said he hoped their Ashes win would help to inspire more young Aussies to take up the sport.

"I really want to celebrate. I want a way to acknowledge just how passionate we Australian are about this win, and how amazing it is," he wrote in his petition.

Ned said he hoped people would use the stamp to send mail to the UK, as Australians had earned the right to rub in an Ashes victory.
