The fire has since been brought under control. (9NEWS)

All lanes of a Melbourne freeway have reopened after a suspicious fast-moving grass fire sent smoke billowing over the road.

The MFB says the 12-hectare fire started in an Altona North paddock near Kororoit Creek Road and the Princes Highway at 2.45pm on Tuesday.

It jumped the freeway, forcing police to close three outbound lanes.

Those lanes have now been reopened - just in time for Melbourne's peak hour.

Police will investigate the cause of the fire.
