Tributes flow for young dad killed in 'drag racing' crash

A committed family man has been identified as the motorcyclist killed in a collision in Melbourne’s south-east last night.

Michael McInnes was travelling south along the South Gippsland Highway, Cranbourne, on his motorbike about 11.25pm.

Witnesses have told 9NEWS they saw Mr McInnes and an unknown driver in a red sedan racing each other for at least one kilometre.

Reportedly travelling at high a speed, the 32-year-old carpenter lost control of his bike and crashed into a tree.

Paramedics tried to treat him, but his injuries were too severe and he died at the scene.

This afternoon Mr McInnes’ partner, Libby, took to Facebook to pay tribute to “the light of her life”.

“We are all devastated and numb,” she wrote.

“He was the light of my life and the best ever father to our children.

“I will love you to the day I die.”

His family has told 9NEWS the fatal accident has affected the lives of so many, saying “Michael will be sadly missed.”

Mr McInnes’ friends have said the deceased was an experienced rider and they don't understand how he lost control on a relatively straight stretch of road.

Investigations into the crash are ongoing, with detectives searching for the driver of the red car involved.

Motorists in the area at the time of the crash with dashcam footage are urged to come forward.
