A heartless thief has ruined Christmas for a young Melbourne family, stealing thousands of dollars’ worth of presents including toys for their three-year-old son.

Cranbourne dad Greg Oros left about $5000 worth of wrapped gifts locked in his car boot on Thursday night, tucked away from his inquisitive son, Jackson, and partner, Rebecca Lawson.

As the family slept, a miserly thief broke into the vehicle and snatched all the presents- including toys for the toddler and a laptop containing credit card details.

Security cameras captured the suspect rifling through the car, which was parked just outside the home.

“I was just disgusted that there are people out there that do this and they don’t care,” Ms Lawson told 9News.

“Why do they do this at Christmas time, why do they choose to hurt people?”

The brazen robbery comes after several similar break-ins in the estate in the past few weeks. The couple is now warning their neighbours to be aware of any suspicious activity.

Ms Lawson and Mr Oros are insured and said they do not want charity, but instead just their son to keep smiling this Christmas, and the criminal caught.

“At the end of the day something's going to come back at you. It's just the way the world works,” Ms Lawson said.

Police are now investigating.
