Courts slam harassment after Heydon report

The heads of Australia's commonwealth courts have united to condemn sexual harassment in the wake of the Dyson Heydon scandal.

They have committed to reviewing existing policies and making sure staff understand them, after an independent inquiry found Mr Heydon sexually harassed six associates while he was a High Court judge.

"Sexual harassment in any workplace is unlawful and wholly unacceptable. It is also contrary to the demands of justice that judicial officers are sworn to uphold," they said in a joint statement on Friday.

"For that reason any form of sexual harassment by a judicial officer is not only reprehensible, but a breach of the public trust."

They say it is essential all staff in their courts and tribunals have the confidence to raise any complaints or concerns and be sure they will be properly addressed.

The High Court has written to more than 100 former staff members to uncover the extent of sexual harassment involving judges' associates.

A group of female barristers have also lodged a complaint with the Legal Services Commissioner relating to the allegations against Mr Heydon.

Police have been instructed to investigate the allegations, which Mr Heydon vehemently denies.
