Court delay in case of woman set alight

A man accused of setting his partner on fire in Sydney has had his first court hearing adjourned because a court interpreter was not available.

Surachet Suksa-Ngachareon, 28, was due to front Sydney's Central Local Court on Tuesday but his lawyer asked for the hearing to be adjourned because an interpreter was not available.

Suksa-Ngachareon is charged with causing wounding/grievous bodily harm with intent to murder and breaching an apprehended violence order.

He is accused of dousing his partner, a 34-year-old woman, with a flammable liquid and setting her on fire at a building in Castlereagh Street on March 7.

The woman, an Australian resident of Thai background, remains in hospital in a critical condition.

Suksa-Ngachareon was found with burns at a property in Wattle Street, Ultimo on March 7 and taken to hospital where he was treated under police guard.

He was charged on Monday and remains in custody.

His lawyer Matthew Eddy made no application for bail and the case was adjourned until Wednesday afternoon at Central Local Court.
