‘My legs went to jelly’: Couple on last financial legs win three homes

Two weeks ago, battler couple Joe and Marie Watson had never dreamed of owning their own home - now, they are the proud owners of three multi-million dollar residences in some of the country's most sought-after locations.

The Watsons won the homes in the most recent RSL Art Union Prize Home Lottery, sending them from rags to riches overnight.

However, just weeks ago, the pair were struggling.

"Financially we weren't in a very good position," Mrs Watson said.

"We had given our savings to our daughter to put a deposit on a house, because it's so hard for young people to do it on their own today."

Mr Watson said he thought their daughter's home would become the family home - until they got the call.

"My legs went to jelly and I called out, 'Joe, we've won the lottery," Mrs Watson said.

The couple are now the proud owners of a three-bedroom villa in Noosa, Queensland, a two-bedroom home in Sydney's Potts Point, and a cozy one-bedroom outfit in Port Melbourne.

They settled on the Noosa home as their favourite - not least because it's the closest to their children.

"We've never thought very deeply about the senior years," Mrs Watson said.

"But I always had that feeling we'd be looked after."

Like many who buy tickets in the prize home draw, the pair were mostly eager to do their bit for the RSL.

"You're not thinking of actually winning, you're just thinking of contributing to the causes," Mr Watson said.
