Almost 200 people booted off flights across Australia since July amid security fears

Counter-terrorism officers have booted almost 200 people off flights at Australia's international airports in recent months, the immigration minister says.

Peter Dutton says 199 passengers have been offloaded from flights for national security reasons or other suspicious behaviour since July, compared to 336 for the entire year to June.

One of those intercepted was a minor, he said.

"Maintaining strong security at our borders is critically important in stopping those with evil intent or impressionable young people who have fallen prey to terrorist propaganda from leaving Australia to join murderous groups like Islamic State," Mr Dutton said in Brisbane.

He said some of those people would have been referred to the Australian Federal Police or ASIO while others would have been subjected to increased surveillance.

"People who are stopped from leaving the shores may well decide to manifest their terrorist activity domestically. That's a threat that we live with and the Government is doing everything possible to keep the Australian public safe, everything humanly possible."
