Costo has unveiled the site for its new national warehouse distribution centre, promising an extra 1000 jobs for western Sydney.

The retail giant will spend $77 million redeveloping the site at Kemps Creek over the next 12 months.

Costo Managing Director Patrick Noone said the company chose the site due to its proximity to major motorways.

"As we expand our business, we require a larger facility to serve the needs of our members here in Australia," Mr Noone said.

"This location is ideal for housing our depot and providing hundreds of jobs for Sydney’s booming west."

The 14 hectare facility - the equivalent size of 18 Olympic soccer fields – is located in the Oakdale South Industrial Estate.

About 730 construction jobs will be created from the project, along with another 210 operational jobs.

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian turned the sod on the site today and said she hoped it would encourage other major companies to move their operations west.

"This demonstrates what's possible when you build a new precinct, when you build the roads and the infrastructure required to service that precinct that major brands do come," Ms Berejiklian said.

"They put their hands up and say this is where we want to set up shop."

Costco will open its 10th store in Australia this year, but the new distribution centre will have the capacity to supply 30 stores.

It will also service the company's new online store, which is expected to be up and running next year.
