Queensland's first free supermarket, Serving Our People, has opened a third community supermarket in Beenleigh.

The expansion marks a step forward in providing essential support to those in need.

The supermarket's shelves are stocked with an array of essentials, including fresh produce, frozen meals, meat, household items, and non-perishables.

Founder Yas Matbouly said offering free food to individuals facing financial challenges was a crucial community service as discounting food does not always adequately address the needs of those struggling.

"The whole idea, when we started with People's Market, is to help people who are struggling from food insecurity," Matbouly said.

Shoppers can take 15 items, once per week.

The charity already has stores at Mermaid Beach and Logan, open from 9am to 3pm, with plans to expand its hours based on demand.

The supermarket has already garnered significant demand, with over 5000 individuals utilising its services weekly.

The initiative has found strong support from Logan Mayor Jon Raven, who sees it as a valuable opportunity, particularly for those affected by ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred, to access necessary items.
