Peter Cosgrove is about to take on the role of Australia's 26th governor-general.

General Cosgrove will receive a general salute on Friday from a military guard of honour outside Parliament House in Canberra before heading to the Senate for the official ceremony.

High Court Chief Justice Robert French will swear in the new Queen's representative.

General Cosgrove will then take an oath of office and allegiance.

After he gives a speech there will be a 21-gun salute and a parliamentary reception.

The retired defence chief will become Sir Peter, after Prime Minister Tony Abbott restored knights and dames to the Australian honour system earlier this week.

General Cosgrove's predecessor Quentin Bryce became a dame and has returned to private life in Brisbane.
