Coronavirus: Woolworths cancels essentials packs for elderly

Woolworths says it will no longer be able to create an "essentials pack" for elderly customers struggling to buy supplies during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The supermarket giant announced on Monday it intended to create the packs to assist older Australians in obtaining supplies, but tonight said it had been forced to backtrack.

"Unfortunately, due to the continued high demand, stock availability in our stores, and to avoid any disappointment, this is something that we will not be able to fulfil at this time," Woolworths said in a statement.

Supermarkets like Woolworths and Coles have struggled with stock levels since panic buying became more extreme amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison addressed the nation today, chiding the public for the panic buying and insisting that it stop immediately.

Last week, a set time was announced where stores would only open to elderly and disabled people between 7 and 8am to give them a chance to get vital supplies.

Since this initiative was put in place, several areas have reported issues with these vulnerable Australians gaining access to the stores during this time.
