WA records no new local coronavirus cases, end of lockdown in sight

Western Australia has recorded a fourth day with zero new local coronavirus cases, raising hopes Perth residents may be released from lockdown at 6pm tomorrow.

Premier Mark McGowan said there are two new overseas cases, both in hotel quarantine.

Perth and surrounding areas were put in lockdown after the first new local COVID-19 case was diagnosed on Sunday after months without a single infection in the state.

"At this stage of the lockdown, this is the news we were hoping for," he said.

Mr McGowan said if these results continue, "the end to lockdown is in sight". The lockdown is due to lift at 6pm tomorrow.

The number of tests performed yesterday has fallen again though, to 7,767.

Mr McGowan said because of the situation in Victoria, travellers from that state will still be required to enter quarantine,

"Given the evolving situation in Victoria, we have now made a decision to pause our planned border control transition with Victoria for now," he said.

"Victoria was due to move to the very low-risk category from midnight tonight, but that has now been put on hold and we will assess the situation over coming days."

He said travellers from Victoria will still need to self-quarantine for 14 days and undergo a day-11 test.

"It is possible that Victoria may need to go back to the medium-risk category," he said.

"But hopefully the situation there will remain under control. I acknowledge this will cause inconvenience and frustration for many people."

'Not time to let our guards down'

WA Police Commissioner Chris Dawson cautioned those in lockdown in the bushfire region to remain vigilant with emergency warnings.

"This is not a time to let our guards down," Commissioner Dawson said.

"For those of you that are in lockdown in the Perth, Peel and South West regions, keep wearing your mask, keep doing what you have been doing for the last four days."

He offered his sympathies to all those who have lost their homes in the blazes.

"I know some of my police officers have also had their properties affected. We will continue to support and actively patrol," he said.

Police speak with WA's positive COVID-19 case for second time

Commissioner Dawson is now providing an update on WA's positive COVID-19 case.

"This man continues to work very closely with the Department of Health contact trace team, and with the police, who, in fact, have spoken to him again for the second time," he said.

"He continues to be cooperative. There's nothing in his movements that we have found that is contrary to what he's previously provided."

High-risk close contacts of WA case retested

WA Health has retested the four high-risk close contacts of the state's single COVID-19 positive case.

Health Minister Roger Cook said these contacts have all returned a second negative test.

"This is good news, and they all remain in hotel quarantine," Mr Cook said.

"All close and casual contacts of the confirmed case will be tested again from today. WA Health continues to follow up all contacts, to ensure they have been tested."

In total, 191 close contacts of the confirmed case have been identified.

Of those, 156 of these have returned negative results.

An additional 258 casual contacts have also been identified.

Of this number, 200 have returned negative results.
