Victoria records slight increase in COVID-19 infections overnight while a dip is reported in NSW

Seven more people have died with COVID-19 in Victoria overnight as the state records a slight increase in case numbers.

A further 8976 new COVID-19 infections were reported today, an increase on yesterday's 7918; while 443 people are being treated in hospital with the virus, another slight increase.

In New South Wales, 10,856 new cases were reported this morning and eight deaths, compared to yesterday's 11,116 and four deaths.

There are 1576 patients being treated across the state's hospital system, up slightly from yesterday.

Today's numbers come in the wake of Australia scrapping the requirement for international travellers to provide a negative COVID-19 test prior to travel.

Removing a major barrier to international tourists visiting down under more than two years after the coronavirus pandemic began, overseas travellers will now no longer need to provide a negative pre-departure test before flying.

This means travellers can avoid RATs and expensive PCR tests which had to be taken within 72 hours of boarding a flight, with a dreaded positive result causing untold chaos to a passenger's itinerary.
