Cops catch pair from Sydney's west allegedly travelling into lockdown zone

Two people from Sydney's west have been fined for allegedly breaking coronavirus restrictions on the Northern Beaches, where a cluster outbreak has shut Greater Sydney out from other states and territories.

NSW Police yesterday afternoon intercepted a man, 60, and woman, 39, on Manly's East Esplanade, and issued them infringement notices for allegedly travelling into the locked down region.

The Padstow man and Bankstown woman did not have a lawful excuse or exemption for being in the Northern Beaches, police said.

Both were directed to leave the area.

The Northern Beaches cluster now numbers 68, with a further update expected this morning.

Last night authorities issued health alerts for dozens of businesses visited by confirmed COVID cases.

Yesterday NSW Health announced 30 new coronavirus infections, with 28 linked to the cluster which first emerged in Avalon.
