Sydney man allegedly steals 400 toilet paper rolls amid coronavirus panic buying

A Sydney man has been charged with stealing about 400 rolls of toilet paper and allegedly trying to fleece other supermarkets of their stash at the peak of coronavirus panic buying.

NSW Police said a 30-year-old Auburn man was charged yesterday in relation to a series of thefts and attempted thefts from supermarkets in the city's south-west last weekend.

Police allege he was in the company of another man when they stole toilet paper from Auburn and Granville stores, and when they visited Bass Hill and Lidcombe stores with intent to steal.

The man faces a raft of charges, including two counts of larceny, robbery in company, and break and enter of a dwelling with intent.

"At this time of crisis, it only takes one fool to cause a high level of unnecessary community anxiety," Minister for Police and Emergency Services David Elliott said.

"I congratulate the police on this arrest."

The man is set to face Parramatta Local Court today via video link.

Investigations are continuing and further arrests are expected.
