South Australia could open its borders by Christmas

South Australia Premier Steven Marshall says he will look to reopen the state borders and move away from state lockdowns once 80 per cent of the eligible population has been vaccinated.

All state and territory leaders initially agreed to a plan to open up the states at national cabinet, however Western Australia, Queensland and Tasmania have since backed away from the commitment as they continue to pursue a COVID-zero strategy.

Mr Marshall said reaching the vaccination target would be key to South Australians being reunited with loved ones interstate this Christmas.

"I think once we get to double dose 80 per cent vaccination across South Australia, we'll certainly move away from state lockdowns," Mr Marshall said.

"In terms of state lockouts, I think we'll also be moving away from that and moving towards a more LGA or exposure site exclusions, rather than whole of state."

Currently, 40 per cent of eligible South Australians have received two doses of a COVID-19 vaccine.

South Australia recorded one new local case of COVID-19 on Saturday, after a miner travelling from Sydney to Adelaide tested positive. There were no local cases recorded yesterday.
