Return traveller charged over self-quarantine breach after 'spotted chatting in retirement village'

An elderly man from Western Australia as been charged for breaching self-quarantine after allegedly being spotted at the local shops and going for a bicycle ride.

The 71-year-old Geraldton man had been ordered to self-quarantine for 14 days after returning from New Zealand on Thursday under regulations to reduce the spread of coronavirus.

Police claim they found him outside his unit after reports he'd been seen chatting to others in his retirement village, going to the shops and taking a bike ride.

The man was charged with fail to comply with direction under the Western Australian Emergency Management Act.

He's due to appear in court on April 16.

This comes as another WA resident is charged for allegedly contravening bio security checkpoints.

Police allege the 36-year-old was denied entry to the Kimberly region at the Sandfire checkpoint on Friday before being found in a car outside a Broome premises the next day.

He failed to meet any exemptions and found to be unauthorised to enter the biosecurity area.

He has been charged with fail to comply with emergency requirements under Commonwealth laws.

The man is due to appear in court today.
