SA pizza shop under police guard amid outrage over COVID-19 lockdown

Police in Adelaide are guarding the Woodville Pizza shop as anger grows over a lie that sent the state into lockdown.

Officers have been stationed outside the business since yesterday when it was revealed a worker had lied about contracting COVID-19.

The man in question initially claimed he tested positive after ordering a pizza from the Woodville Pizza Bar in Adelaide where a worker had been infected with the virus.

This caused significant concern among health authorities as transmission via food delivery would have suggested a particularly strong strain of COVID-19.

However, yesterday it was revealed the man in fact worked at the restaurant and likely contracted it while working in close proximity to the previous case.

The lie sent 1.7 million people into lockdown, closed down thousands of businesses and cost the state millions of dollars.

On Friday afternoon, the Woodville's Pizza Bar's Facebook page and Google listing was targeted with negative comments and reviews from South Australians outraged over the unnecessary lockdown.

"I hope your business shuts down forever and never sells another pizza again," one resident said.

"I really hope you all get charged. You willingly and willfully lied. You caused an entire state to go into lockdown. You caused many casual staff to lose income. You should be ashamed of yourselves," another wrote.

Police presence around the business increased as the day went on in case of any attacks on the business.

The state's Premier, Steven Marshall slammed the worker responsible.

"To say I am fuming about the actions of this individual - is an absolute understatement," Mr Marshall said.

"This selfish actions of this individual have put our whole state in a very difficult situation.

"His actions have affected businesses, individuals, family groups and are completely and utterly unacceptable."

South Australians will be released from lockdown three days early as a result of the revelations.

Three new coronavirus cases were confirmed yesterday, however all were in quarantine.
