Queensland nightclubs could face fines after reopening

A night out in Brisbane over the weekend could cost some partygoers thousands of dollars with video showing at least two nightclubs flouting social distancing rules.

Police are now examining the images and are to decide whether fines will be issued to those people identified.

Queensland bars and clubs were allowed to reopen their doors on Friday but a ban on dancing in the venues remains.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said yesterday she hoped nightclubs would reopen despite the dance-floor ban because "young people can still sit down and enjoy a meal" and listen to music.

But she confirmed police would be investigating after footage showed some patrons dancing.

And if they determined people had broken COVID Safe plans, they could be fined, Ms Palaszczuk warned.

Videos from Friday showed jovial groups packing into bars and clubs to enjoy their first night out in almost four months.

The scenes of crowds packed together at nightclubs and pubs across Queensland on Friday and Saturday nights was a cause of concern, Australian Medical Association president Dr Tony Bartone told Today.

"It wasn't that long ago that Victoria, the numbers were just there in comparison to the other states, equally as good and it's gotten out of control very quickly here," Dr Bartone said.

"What we saw in Queensland on the weekend in terms of the nightclubbing, it's way too early to start the party. It's really COVID-19 is here for a long time to come."

Stage three restrictions were lifted across the state on Friday meaning large parties and community sport are also now permitted.
