South East Queensland hospital outbreak grows, with reinforcement staff sent in to Ipswich Hospital

Queensland has recorded one new coronavirus case overnight.

The woman, who is in her late 20s, had recently returned from overseas and is currently in hotel quarantine.

There are now 25 active cases in Queensland, with 7660 tests conducted in the past 24 hours.

Ms Palaszczuk said three existing cases have recovered and been discharged.

"I want to congratulate and thank Queenslanders for their continuing good work in confronting the pandemic and urge people to keep getting tested, stay home if you are sick and keep up social distancing," Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk told parliament this morning.

Yesterday two new cases were recorded including another nurse at Ipswich Hospital, south-west of Brisbane.

The woman, aged in her 40s, takes the total number of cases connected to the cluster to five.

More than 200 staff remain in quarantine as elective surgeries are cancelled or moved to other hospitals and reinforcement staff were sent in.

Queensland's Deputy Premier Steven Miles said the additional cases took the number of active cases in the state to 25.

More than 6000 tests were conducted over the past 24 hours, including more than 500 on Russell Island in Moreton Bay.

Queensland Health director-general John Wakefield said the health worker had contracted the virus from one of her colleagues, more than 200 of whom had gone into quarantine.

"She was identified as a contact of that previous case," Dr Wakefield said.
