NSW residents in lockdown were today told they could only exercise or shop within five kilometres of their residence if possible, a reduction from the previous limit of 10km.

Specifically, people who are not in the government's 12 LGAs of concern may shop and exercise within their LGA, or within 5km from their home if they are crossing LGA boundaries.

Those within the LGAs of concern are restricted to the 5km-from-home limit at all times.

The change is part of a raft of new rules ushered in by Premier Gladys Berejiklian following the state registering a record 466 new COVID-19 cases overnight.

Residents in the 12 LGAs of concern were already restricted to the 5km radius before today.

With fines for breaching public health orders also ratcheting up, it is important to know just what is and isn't within 5km.

If you don't have a local atlas handy, here's how you can find out.

One popular online tool was developed by Ireland's Dave Bolger early in the pandemic, after the Irish government imposed a 2km limit on residents.

The 2kmFromHome site, launched on March 27, 2020, allows people to check exactly what is in their remit.

Don't be fooled by the name - the site allows you to check a several distance limits, including 5km and 10km.

Hit the search button, and check the limits on any address you want.

Google Maps obviously allows people to check the distance of a travel route, which can be helpful, but not hugely precise in determining the limits of a radius - though it is a given that if a foot or car trip's distance is less than 5km, you're safe.

However, Google Maps can also allow somebody to measure direct distance.

Open up the site, and right-click on your location, and select "measure distance".

Click on the destination you want to reach, and it will tell you how far away it is without taking into account the roads you'll need to use to get there.

It's an easy way to check for a given destination without having to search through the entire 5km bubble.

The NSW Government website has its own search tool as well, which functions similarly to 2kmFromHome.

Though it is as of August 14 set up primarily for the 12 existing LGAs of concern, you can still search any address you'd like.
