What you need to know about Sydney's lockdown extension

Greater Sydney's coronavirus lockdown has been extended for at least another two weeks as the state grapples with surging COVID-19 cases.

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian confirmed the lockdown extension today after the state recorded 97 new local cases.

"The lockdown will unfortunately need to be extended for at least another two weeks with the current settings," she said.

When will Sydney's lockdown end?

Greater Sydney's lockdown has been extended for at least another two weeks until Friday, July 30.

However, the lockdown may be further extended after the two-week period if the virus is still being transmitted in the community.

Ms Berejiklian said Sydney had to drive the number of people infectious in the community down to zero before lockdown could lift.

Of today's 97 new cases, 24 were infectious in the community.

"The 24 number is what we need to get down to as close to zero as possible," she said.

"If we have cases in isolation, that is less of a concern to us.

"We will know at the end of the two weeks to what extent we need to extend the lockdown, and whether there is any chance of face-to-face schooling.

"Unfortunately none of us have a crystal ball and our success in getting this case numbers down to all those infectious rates to as close to zero as possible depends on all of us and how we respond."

What lockdown restrictions are in place?

The restrictions currently enforced will remain the same, Ms Berejiklian said.

Stay-at-home orders and remote learning will continue to be in place.

However, the settings will be reviewed throughout the course of the lockdown.

The premier said she would not hesitate to tighten restrictions if the health advice advised her to do so.

"If health advice changes and we need to do anything further, we will," she said.
