A Melbourne police officer has tested positive to coronavirus, shutting down a station in the city's east.

Ringwood Police Station was temporarily closed and professionally cleaned on March 17 after an officer was informed someone they had contact with whilst on annual leave had tested positive to COVID-19.

The officer undertook duties that involved minimal contact with members of the public.

"They were placed into self-isolation that day and have since tested positive to COVID-19," Victoria Police spokesman Sam Bidey said.

"As a precaution the station will be closed for several hours and thoroughly cleaned again today."

Two members who had close contact with the affected officer also went into self-isolation as per health advice.
