Man charged after attempting to leave Sydney hotel quarantine

A man returning from the US has been charged by police after allegedly trying to leave his hotel quarantine room.

The 43-year-old man arrived in Sydney from Los Angeles last Wednesday and is originally from Queensland.

He allegedly refused COVID-19 testing and was therefore required to complete a further 10 days in hotel quarantine, NSW Police said in a statement.

It's alleged the man challenged police officers working at the Elizabeth Street hotel by questioning their powers under the Public Health Act.

He was physically escorted back to his room by the officers.

Extra security guards were stationed on the floor to make sure the man complied with his quarantine order.

He has been refused bail and is due to appear at Parramatta Local Court today.

In addition to the man, NSW Police have also issued seven other people with infringement notices for breaking COVID-19 restrictions.

Last night, police officers broke up a house party at Guildford in Sydney's west.

There were about 30 to 40 guests at the party and the 23-year-old homeowner was charged $1000 for the breach and investigations were continuing, police said.

Six people have also been fined for allegedly not wearing masks across Greater Sydney up until 5pm yesterday. Most of the people fined for not wearing masks were either travelling on trains or at train stations.

A further 29 people were issued with warnings about not wearing masks.
