Heavily pregnant Wuhan evacuee could give birth in Australian quarantine

Two people who were evacuated out of Wuhan to Christmas Island are undergoing further tests, after initial assessments couldn't clear them of having the coronavirus.

Medical staff on the island have assessed all of the passengers who travelled to the island last night, taking a closer look at 14.

Only 241 passengers were transferred to Christmas Island overnight, with a heavily pregnant woman and her partner sent back to Perth on board a Royal Flying Doctor plane.

Paramedics were completely covered when they met the pair on the tarmac.

The couple was then transferred into an ambulance and driven out of the complex. They have now been allowed to go home, but will have to spend the next two weeks in quarantine.

Western Australia's Chief Health Officer Dr Andrew Robertson said Perth hospitals will be prepared if the woman goes into labour during that time.

"Our staff are used to managing patients who are highly infectious so this is nothing new for those staff, they know what they're doing and they do it on a daily basis," he said.

"Throughout our hospitals we have a lot of negative pressure rooms."

The Health Department says there has been no risk to the public, with the operation to bring 243 people back to Australia happening in Western Australia.

So far, 12 people have been tested for the coronavirus in Western Australia and all have been cleared.
