Teenagers given green light for booster jabs

Older teenagers can now receive their COVID-19 booster shot after Australia's expert vaccine panel today approved the jab for 16-and-17 year olds.

The Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (ATAGI) has extended Pfizer booster approval to people in that age group who received their vaccines three months ago.

They will be able to receive their jabs at state government-run hubs and also pharmacies and GPs.

Federal Health Minister Greg Hunt said the move was a big step for Australia's vaccination rollout.

"From today, 16-18-year-olds are eligible and that's a really important step forward.

"We have one of the highest vaccination rates in the world but you will be better protected if you have the booster."

Mr Hunt said 370,000 people in the age group will be eligible to receive the booster shot from today.

The Federal Government has assured Australians there are enough vaccine stocks to extend the booster program.

Mr Hunt also said it is likely a third dose will become mandatory for people to gain full vaccination status.

"The technical advisory group on immunisation is considering that. I think it is more likely than no. That's my expectation."

Victoria Premier Daniel Andrews is pushing the idea and it is set to be considered by National Cabinet in coming weeks.

It may also change the description from "fully vaccinated" to "up-to-date on vaccinations".

Deputy Chief Medical Officer Professor Michael Kidd said earlier this week that a third dose offered the best protection against coronavirus.

Other countries have extended booster shots to teenagers.

In the US, teens aged 12 to 15 could also now receive a Pfizer boost.
