State of Emergency extended in Canberra by 90 days

The ACT Public Health Emergency will be extended in Canberra by 90 days.

Even though it has been more than five weeks since a new COVID-19 case was recorded in Canberra, the decision has been made as the situation in New South Wales and Victoria remains volatile.

ACT Health Minister Rachel Stephen-Smith said it's about protecting the health and safety of Canberrans.

"While we are in a good position in the ACT it is likely, there will be further outbreaks in Australia in the coming weeks and months," Ms Stephen-Smith said.

"We need to remain vigilant as we closely monitor the situation across the country and manage the risks these outbreaks present to the ACT."

The extension means the ACT Chief Health Officer can continue to implement COVID-19 restriction until November 19.

The ACT is likely to remain in stage 3.1 of the COVID-19 Recovery Plan, with no immediate plan to ease restrictions.

ACT Health has reminded residents to avoid unnecessary travel, particularly to Greater Sydney.

"We are continuing to ask Canberrans to maintain the behaviours we have all learnt over the past months - keep your physical distance, practice good hand hygiene and stay at home if you are unwell and get tested for any COVID-19 symptoms.

"It is in everyone's interest to keep our city free of COVID-19 to the greatest possible extent and to prevent community transmission."
