Over 38,600 new cases of COVID-19 in Australia as flu season approaches

Health experts are concerned COVID-19 cases could spike alongside flu infections over winter after Australia recorded 38,623 new cases of the virus nationally.

New South Wales recorded 11,939 new cases of the virus, including 6401 positive rapid antigen tests and 5538 positive PCR tests.

The deaths of 21 people were reported in the last day.

There are currently 1510 people in hospital, with 68 people in intensive care.

Meanwhile, Victoria reported 10,779 new cases of COVID-19 and 11 deaths in the last 24 hours.

There were 473 people in hospital and 25 patients who received treatment in intensive care.

Six people in the state are currently on ventilators.

Queensland recorded 7668 new COVID-19 cases and eight deaths in the past 24 hours, with 504 people currently in hospital.

The state's Chief Health Officer, Dr John Gerrard urged all residents to get their flu shot ahead of Winter, warning residents they could get COVID-19 and the flu simultaneously.

"Infection with both viruses is more severe than any of the viruses alone," he said.

"For the past three weeks, the number of influenza cases has doubled every week."

Only 11 per cent of Queenslanders have received their flu shot this year, as authorities warn all Australians to get the jab.

"This is the year to get vaccinated against influenza," Dr Gerrard said.

Western Australia has hit 9782 new COVID-19 cases, as more than 240 people remain in hospital.

The state's total number of cases includes 4004 positive PCR tests and 5778 positive rapid antigen tests.

The health department also reported two historical deaths.

The Northern Territory has reported 399 new cases of COVID-19.

There are currently 37 people in hospital, with eight patients requiring oxygen and one in ICU.

The territory has not reported any new deaths.

There are 3591 new cases of coronavirus in South Australia, as 221 remain in hospital with 11 in ICU.

The state has reported 12 COVID-related deaths in the past 24 hours.

Tasmania recorded 1078 new cases of the virus.

There are currently 50 people in hospital with COVID-19, including 24 people being treated specifically for COVID-19 and 26 people with the virus being treated for unrelated medical conditions.

The state did not report any new deaths.

The Australian Capital Territory has reported 1080 new cases and one new death.

There are currently 67 people in hospital with four people in intensive care.

No one currently requires a ventilator.
