The mandatory seven-day isolation period for people with COVID-19 could be scaled back to five days, 9News understands.

The change will be discussed at this week's national cabinet meeting and is likely to get consensus from all states and territories.

NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet has been pushing for the reduction

He wants it to be scrapped entirely but it's more likely the period will be rolled back slowly.

Currently, people who test positive to COVID-19 have to isolate for a week.
