Cormann rules out switch to lower house

Senior cabinet minister Mathias Cormann has ruled out a switch to the lower house to replace Julie Bishop in her safe West Australian seat.

New Prime Minister Scott Morrison has restored Senator Cormann to his roles as finance minister and the government's leader in the upper house after he resigned at the height of last week's leadership crisis.

As the fallout continued into the weekend, Ms Bishop announced she would quit as foreign minister and was weighing up whether to recontest her ultra-safe Perth seat of Curtin.

Asked whether a switch to the lower house was on the cards if Ms Bishop leaves politics, Senator Cormann said: "absolutely not".

"I love my job as leader of the government in the Senate. I'm very grateful to the prime minister for having given me the opportunity to continue to serve in that role," the WA senator told ABC radio.

"This is where I will continue to make my contribution."

Ms Bishop made a failed bid for the Liberal leadership during Friday's spill after more than 10 years as the party's deputy.
