A Victorian father-of-three charged with the murder of a notorious Geelong criminal has faced court.

Joshua Rozynski, 26, has never been in custody, but detectives allege he opened fire on a carload of injured associates seconds after the vehicle had crashed.

The young father is accused of gunning down a convicted drug dealer in an ambush on Saturday.

Victim Daniel Eagle, 43, was inside an SUV that had crashed on the Princes Highway in Corio about 6am, minutes after gun shots rang out at his home and a ute was seen speeding away.

As the 43-year-old grandfather sat in the passenger seat of the wreck, police allege Joshua Rozynski pulled up and shot him dead.

A man claiming to be Mr Rozynski's father told 9News his son - who runs his own mowing business - would not know how to get a gun.

"He's a hard worker and a good f---ing father, he's a good f---ing person, that's what he is - never been in trouble with the f---ing law ever," he said.

Mr Rozynski did not come up from the cells to face a magistrate today, his lawyer speaking on his behalf.

Meanwhile friends of the alleged victim have erected a memorial outside his home, threatening retribution.

Mr Eagle was due to appear in court in May after being charged by Geelong's sex offence and child abuse investigation team.
