Cop basher wants to 'buy her flowers to say sorry'

A suspected burglar who bashed a police officer while being arrested in Glenroy has apologised and offered flowers and hug.

Ahmed El Lababidi was taken into custody in Melbourne's north west last April after he lashed out.

Punching the Senior Constable to the face multiple times, the 29-year-old victim required reconstructive dental surgery, with her injuries costing more than $15,000.

"To this day I'm very sorry," El Lababidi told 9NEWS outside court today.

"I'll have to give her flowers and a hug because I didn't mean it."

El Lababidi was charged with a number of offences including assaulting an emergency worker.

But that charge was dropped due to his mental illness.

Instead, he pleaded guilty to resisting an emergency worker and intentionally causing injury.

He avoided jail time and was slapped with 200 hours of community work.

When asked why he attacked the member, El Lababidi said "they attacked me first, it was self-defence."

The Office of Public Prosecution is appealing the sentence describing it as manifestly inadequate and that he should have received the mandatory six months jail term.

An outcome was expected today but the case was adjourned until next month.
