We've already won a medal and the Games haven't even begun

Australian boxer Taylah Robertson has claimed the first medal of the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games - before they've even begun.

The 19-year-old from the Sunshine Coast was the beneficiary of a lucky draw in the women’s 51kg division and is guaranteed at least a bronze medal.

Only seven boxers have entered the competition so three bouts will be contested as quarterfinals, with Robertson receiving a direct passage to the last four.

Both losers of the semifinals take bronze medals ensuring Robertson cannot go home empty handed.

"For some reason the numbers in that division were down. When you look at some of the boys divisions, some of them have 24 to 26 boxers there," Robertson's coach Mark Evans told the Sunshine Coast Daily.

Evans says he thinks the teenager can take home the gold.

"She's probably the fittest I've ever seen her. She's so sharp. I was doing pads with her on Tuesday (and) her hand speed was just amazing so she's ready to go."

Robertson's semifinal is scheduled for April 13.

The boxing starts at Oxenford Studios tomorrow.
