Aussie Matt Glaetzer suffers shock defeat in men's sprint

Australia's Matt Glaetzer, the favourite for gold in the men's sprint competition, suffered a shock defeat in the 1/8 finals at the Anna Meares Velodrome today.

Glaetzer had qualified fastest and set a Commonwealth Games record of 9.583 seconds in the process, but it mattered little as he suffered a surprise loss to Malaysia's Muhammad Sahrom, who had qualified 16th-fastest.

In front of a disappointed sellout crowd, Glaetzer didn't have the answers in a tactically focused race.

"I tried to get through with minimum effort. I just needed to get my speed going. The speed just wasn't there," Glaetzer said.

"It's devastating. It'll take a little while to get over this one. To lose like that is embarrassing."

Glaetzer won gold in the final of the men's keirin yesterday.
