Supermarket to remove aerosol deodorants from aisles in all NT stores

Coles is removing aerosol deodorants from its supermarket aisles in the Northern Territory.

The company says it has already made the move of locking up the aerosols in Alice Springs and some other shops, but will now bring it in across the Territory.

The products have been linked to solvent abuse.

"Like a number of retailers, Coles is working to minimise harm caused by the misuse of aerosol products," a spokeswoman said.

"All Coles Supermarkets in the Northern Territory now have lockable aerosol cabinets installed, and customers seeking to purchase these products can simply ask a team member at the service desk for assistance."

Woolworths said it has also pulled products from the shelves in certain stores, and placed them behind the customer service desk.

"We treat product misuse seriously and intend to play our part in upholding community safety," a Woolworths spokesman said.

"Together with our suppliers, we're exploring more practical longer-term solutions that will enable us to safely display products on the shopfloor.

"We'll continue to work closely with local police and community organisations to address concerns around misuse."
