Victoria moves to ban discount fuel price boards

Coles and Woolworths will be banned from advertising their discounted fuel prices outside their petrol stations in Victoria after complaints from motorists.

The state government and RACV agree the practice is luring customers who fail to read the fine print.

The new rules, which are already enforced in South Australia and New South Wales, mean the discounted unleaded price will be completely removed from the petrol display board.

The shopper docket saving can still be advertised.

Consumer affairs minister Jane Garrett said the changes put everyone on an equal playing field with independent service stations having failed to previously keep up with deals promoted by supermarket giants.

Coles and Woolworths will have until the end of the year to make the changes with any non-compliant station facing a $3000 fine.
