Four people have been hospitalised after a miniature steam train at a popular Canberra tourist attraction derailed in the middle of school holidays.

ACT Police said several passengers were injured when a train carriage at Cockington Green came off its tracks at about 10am on Thursday.

"Four people were treated at the scene by ACT Ambulance Service paramedics and transported to hospital," police said in a statement.

"Both ACT Policing and Worksafe ACT attended the scene - it has not yet been determined which agency will take carriage of the investigation into the incident."

Police have asked for witnesses and anyone with mobile footage of the incident to contact them.

Cockington Green is a popular attraction for tourists and school groups in Canberra.

The steam train, which costs $3 to ride, was taken out of action for two days for what the venue described as some "necessary" maintenance ahead of the school holidays.

"Due to some necessary pre-Floriade maintenance, it is unfortunate that the miniature steam train will need to be off the rails on Thursday, 17th August 2023 and Friday, 18th August 2023," Cockington Green said in a statement at the time.

"We regret this necessary inconvenience however it is important that the train is able to cope with the expected increase in demand with the upcoming Floriade and school holiday period.

"The safety of visitors and staff is the most important consideration in the operation of our beloved miniature steam-train."
