Coalition party room to talk refugees

Coalition MPs are expected to query the government's plan to resettle 12,000 refugees from the Syrian crisis at a party room meeting on Tuesday.

The coalition joint party room will meet in Canberra for the second last time, as parliament holds its final sitting fortnight for the year.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull is facing calls to provide greater reassurance that proper security checks will be conducted on people seeking permanent resettlement.

Immigration Minister Peter Dutton says the names of any refugees who raise security concerns are being set aside while others are assessed.

But Liberal senator Cory Bernardi said the FBI and European authorities had voiced concerns about refugees carrying false identity documents, and potentially being linked to terrorist groups.

The cabinet needs to reassess its decision, he said.

Labor has backed the extra 12,000 intake, but also wants to ensure that all appropriate security checks are being done.

The first refugee family arrived in Perth last week, and Mr Dutton says 2800 people are currently being assessed.
