Coalition narrows gap in new poll

The Morrison government has recovered slightly in the latest Fairfax-Ipsos poll, but would still be swept from power at next year’s election.

The coalition has risen three to 48 after preferences, with Labor down three to 52.

Labor’s primary vote slipped one to 34, the coalition up two to 37.

Scott Morrison still leads Bill Shorten as preferred prime minister, despite falling one to 47, with a 12 point lead over the Labor leader.

The slight bounce in the government’s standing will bring little joy for coalition MPs as they face being driven into opposition whenever the election’s called.
