Flipped crane knocks out power to 35,000 in Melbourne's south-east

A crane has flipped and crashed onto a power substation in Melbourne's south-east, knocking out power to 35,000 homes.

The Department of Transport confirmed affected areas include Clyde, Clyde North, Cranbourne North, Cranbourne East, Cranbourne and Berwick.

The crane toppled over about 3pm, taking out powerlines on Berwick-Cranbour Road in Clyde North.

Authorities continue to work on bringing the crane upright because it is still tipped over. The crane driver managed to free himself from the cab after "a significant amount of time" but did not require medical help.

Thirteen sets of traffic lights are out, with motorists urged to take extreme care in conditions and be patient.

The incident is causing major delays along the Monash Freeway.

Drivers have been told if they approach an intersection with lights flashing amber or blacked out, they must follow the same give way rules that dictate an intersection that has a stop or give way sign or line.

"Drivers must give way to any vehicle already in, entering or approaching an intersection, except if the vehicle," a Department of Transport spokesperson said.

The incident is now being investigated by WorkSafe.
