Clearer powers passed for crime fighters

The interrogation powers of some of Australia's top crime-fighting agencies are being clarified and strengthened.

Justice Minister Michael Keenan told parliament that legislation would ensure the Australian Crime Commission, the Integrity Commissioner and the Australian Commission for Law Enforcement Integrity could play a full part in the fight against organised crime, foreign fighters and law enforcement corruption.

It was passed in the lower house with Labor support on Thursday.

Recent court cases have limited the way the agencies have used their questioning powers, with the Crime Commission stopped from obtaining valuable intelligence about serious criminal activity and recruiters of foreign fighters.

The main change will allow the agencies to question people about matters relating to charges they already face in court.

However, there would also be stronger safeguards to ensure a fair trial, Mr Keenan said.
