There needs to be a clear, cohesive and complete strategy for dealing with Islamic State and so far the Australian people haven't go it, a Labor MP says.

Anthony Byrne, deputy chairman of the parliamentary intelligence and security committee, said Muslim constituents asked him why it was taking so long to remove the IS menace from the Middle East as it was affecting their families.

He said he was hearing claims that the coalition was gaining some advantages over IS when there was really no substantial victory and many thought they were losing.

"We really do need to have a complete, cohesive, clear strategy, a cogent strategy, a strategy even with some form of timeframe to how to deal with these people," he told ABC television on Monday.

"The Australian people deserve that and I don't think the Australian people have got that," he told ABC television."
