Clean-up underway after chemical leak at Mobil plant in Altona

Firefighters have undertaken a clean-up of a Mobil plant in Altona, in Melbourne’s west, after a chemical leak overnight.

Specialist Hazmat crews responded to the Millers Road plant about 3am after a security staff member alerted them to the leak, identified as hydrogen and a flammable liquid used in petroleum distillation, Naptha.

Around 28 firefighters used nitrogen on the site to contain the leak.

The facility remains in partial lockdown, despite the leak being listed as under control around 5.30am.

The Mobil plant, which is one of the largest in Victoria, produces enough petroleum to power around 30,000 cars a day.
