Geelong bank robbery foiled by 75-year-old customer

An alleged bank robber has been detained by a 75-year-old man now faces armed robbery charges in Geelong.

Police have been told a woman and a man armed with a gun entered the NAB branch in Newcomb yesterday afternoon.

The 75-year-old customer was able to tackle the woman, who was armed with a screwdriver, Sergeant Ron Gray from Geelong Police told the Geelong Advertiser.

Her partner then backed out of the building, holding the shotgun.

Police described the behaviour of the customer as “very courageous.”

“Not knowing the severity of what could have happened, with the male having a shotgun,” Seargeant Gray said.

“She was screaming at him to shoot him, so he’s a very lucky man.”

A second man also helped to detain the woman as they waited for police to arrive on the scene.

The Geelong woman, 29, appeared at Geelong Magistrates Court this morning.

The man fled in a car and is yet to be located.
