Christmas tree decoration recalled over risk of choking, burns or death in children

Australians are urged to check their Christmas trees for a gnome decoration that has been recalled over a breach of safety regulations.

History & Heraldry's LED light-up heads were found to not be compliant with mandatory standards for button and coin batteries.

Young children may be able to open the packaging around the small batteries, according to ACCC's Product Safety.

"There is a risk of choking, severe internal burn injuries or death to young children if they gain access to the button/coin batteries," the authority said.

"This can occur within two hours of swallowing or placing them into their bodies."

The gnomes come with various names and assorted colours like green and red, white and, black and red and purple and white.

They were sold at more than 240 traders nationally between October 1 last year to December 4 this year.

Major newsagents like Nextra and companies like Hot Bargain were among some of the retailers that carried the decoration.

Australians are urged to "immediately stop" using it and place them out of the reach of children.

The gnomes can be returned for a full refund at the place of purchase.
